Mhairi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mhairi or Mhàiri (Scottish-English pronunciation based on Scottish Gaelic vaːrɪ , in English often like Mary ) is a female given name .

origin

The name is a Scottish Gaelic variant of the Hebrew Mirjam or Maria . Strictly speaking, it is part of the vocative form a Mhàiri (IPA əˈvaːɾʲɪ ) from the nominative Màiri . The meaning of Mirjam and thus also of Mhairi has not been clarified. A more recent attempt at interpretation assumes that it comes from Egyptian and means beloved by God .
