Vampire Weekend is a New York based indie rock band signed to XL Recordings .
history
As students at Columbia University in New York , Ezra Koenig and Chris Tomson first appeared as a comedy - rap duo under the name L'Homme Run , before they formed the band's current formation on February 6, 2006 with fellow students Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Baio and named themselves after the title of a film that Koenig made with friends.
Vampire Weekend soon became better known through the blogosphere and attracted attention through a concert review in the New York Times . In 2007 the band recorded their self-titled debut album and landed their first single success with Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa , which was voted 67th of the 100 best songs of 2007 by Rolling Stone . The album was in the American album charts for several weeks in the spring of 2008 and was largely enthusiastically received by the music press. As favorite for the best new band in 2008 was Vampire Weekend's first television appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman (February 1, 2008) and the BBC telecast Later with Jools Holland (29 February 2008).
On January 8, 2010, the band's second long player, Contra, was released. As early as mid-October, fans were able to listen to and download the song Horchata, track No. 1 on Contra, on the MySpace music community. On November 17, Cousins, later Giving Up The Gun, was released as a single; Videos were produced for these songs.
Since contra
On July 22, 2011, Ezra Koenig and the rest of the band had a Ustream session with their fans. Among other things, the band announced that after the Music to Know Festival in August, no further performances were planned. The band also said after this session they wanted to focus more on a new album. Regarding the last two single releases, Rostam confirmed that Vampire Weekend had started work on new songs for a follow-up to Contra .
During their break, the individual members took part in various individual projects. Bassist Chris Baio appeared on DJ sets, initially participating in Somebody Up There Likes Me, a film by Bob Byingtom. Rostam Batmanglij was busy recording solo material and producing numbers for Das Racist. Ezra Koenig worked with Major Lazer.
On November 11, 2011, it was confirmed that Vampire Weekend was back at Excello Studios in Brooklyn, NYC to write and record new songs for their third album. The album was tentatively named LP3.
On April 26th, 2012 Rolling Stone reported that the new album could be released by the end of the year. “We're getting tons of stuff. It would be nice if our new album could be released this year. For us, however, there has not yet been an opportunity to publish anything new. It might help us if we could take a little more time to do this, ”said Koenig in his statement.
On July 12, 2012, the band presented a new song that was temporarily called New Song No. 2 should wear. While performing at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, singer Koenig talked about work going well on the new album and said it would be out soon. On October 31, 2012, The New Song was named No. 2 officially presented under the title Unbelievers .
In an interview for the February issue of Q 2013 magazine , Koenig described the new album as "darker and livelier" and "very much like the last part of a trilogy". The new work was recorded in the New York studio by Ariel Rechtshaid, who also co-produced the album. The album Modern Vampires of the City was released in May 2013. Like its predecessor, it was able to position itself at the top of the US charts and was named the best album of the year by the music magazine Rolling Stone in December . It received the Best Alternative Album award at the 2014 Grammy Awards .
They were able to win the award again in 2020 . The follow-up album Father of the Bride also won in this category and was also nominated for Album of the Year .
