thank u, next is the fifth studio album by the American singer Ariana Grande . It was released on February 8, 2019.

backgrounds

thank u, next was released only six months after Grande's previous album sweetener . This hit a new direction in the singer's career, as she presented herself more personally on it and increasingly appeared herself as the author of the songs she sang. The commercial and critical success of the work made the musician one of the most celebrated celebrities of her generation. Accordingly, the follow-up album thank u, next was one of the most anticipated of 2019. The title track was released in the previous year and was voted one of the best songs of 2018 by several music magazines. Grande received special attention between the two albums in connection with the death of her ex-boyfriend, the rapper and singer Mac Miller . Music and lyrics

Musically, thank u, next is a classic pop album from the 2010s , which, however, also incorporates elements of contemporary R&B . The songs on the work are characterized by catchy refrains and gentle, warm electronic soundscapes, which are underlaid mainly with 808s known from the trap genre , rapid hi-hats and claps or snares . Grande sings the songs mostly with a bright, clear voice, whereby she starts rapping now and then . On some of the songs, the musician also changes into a partially breathy vocal performance.

In terms of content, the album partly revolves around Grande's handling of strokes of fate in her life. The theme song thank u, next , which is about the influence that Grande's ex-friends had on them, pays homage to the late Mac Miller . fake smile is about the fact that she no longer wants to feign positive feelings for the cameras and those around her. On 7 rings , the singer addresses a shopping spree with a therapeutic character that she experienced with her six best friends. The singer shows a proud and self-confident attitude throughout the album and makes it clear how she strengthened the past and now it is moving forward. Songs like bloodline and break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored accordingly deal with purely sexual experiences without emotional ties, in which Grande seeks pure pleasure.

Cover design

The album cover shows Ariana Grande in a ponytail with closed eyelids and crossed arms, lying against a gray background. With the exception of two bangles, she does not seem to be wearing any clothes, but can only be seen from head to chest . The motif is shown upside down. criticism

Thank u, next was received very positively by critics, especially in the English-speaking world . The self-confidence that the singer shows on the work, as well as the extremely good production, were particularly praised. The musician would begin to develop her own personality and ambitions and, despite the heavy events that influenced the music, she would never forget that it was a fun pop album.

In the German-speaking countries, the reviews tended to be more mixed, although the positive aspects also predominated. Although the lyrical processing of the past years of her life was emphasized here too, there was disagreement as to whether Ariana Grande could create an independent, unmistakable image.

Internationally, the album was rated in direct comparison with its predecessor, and seen as a response to the terrorist attack in Manchester on May 22, 2017 and the death of Mac Miller .
