7 is the commercial debut EP of the US singer and rapper Lil Nas X . It was released on June 21, 2019.

backgrounds

In July 2018, Lil Nas X released his debut mixtape Nasarati , on which he presented himself as a rapper, for free on the Internet - initially without attracting much attention. On December 2 of the same year, the musician brought out his first commercial single, Old Town Road , which did not have any noteworthy success when it was originally released. The title represented a clear deviation from the previous style, as the artist was based on the themes and aesthetics of country music . Over the next four months, the song's popularity grew rapidly until it finally managed to climb to the top of the US charts in April 2019. Around the same time a remix version of the piece of music appeared, which was performed in a duet with the well-known singer Billy Ray Cyrus . This helped the song to further international popularity until it became a number one hit in several countries for weeks or months. In addition to several other nations, the song became the front runner in the United Kingdom , Germany , Austria and Switzerland . When Lil Nas X's first commercial EP was released after his breakthrough at the age of 7 , his lead single was still at the top of several charts. The single Panini was released the day before .

The work was produced by YoungKio , Take a Daytrip , Travis Barker , Bizness Boi , Fwdslxsh , BoyBand , Russ Chell , Roy Lenzo , Ryan Tedder , Zach Skelton , Boi-1da , Allen Ritter , Abaz (music producer) and X-plosive . The rapper Cardi B can be heard as a guest musician on the release alongside Billy Ray Cyrus . All songs were written by Lil Nas X together with the respective producers and any featureings.

The duo Take a Daytrip, which produced the titles Panini and Rodeo , described the collaboration with the artist as one of the best of their career. Lil Nas X, who had never recorded in a professional studio before, showed a natural talent for developing musical visions. When he heard the rough version of Panini's beat , he immediately began to express ideas for a revision and a possible song structure. He also knows how to integrate social media into his career by letting his audience participate in the creation of the songs and thus creating a hype before they are released .

Music and lyrics

The titles on 7 can be assigned to a variety of different genres. The songs Old Town Road and Rodeo combine elements of country music with modern influences of the trap in which they Banjo - or steel guitar -Klänge on 808 - Bass Drums and fast hi-hats can be made. On Kick It , said trap bonds are accompanied by a saxophone , while Panini is a pure genre contribution. Bring U Down and F9mily (You & Me) can be found in alternative rock , the former being close to grunge and the latter being close to pop-punk . C7osure (You Like) , on the other hand, is a classic pop song . Lil Nas X can be heard singing as well as rapping on the songs. According to the variety of musical styles, the topics are also broad. They range from wild west themes and characters from the cartoon series Chowder to dealing with the reception of oneself.

Cover design

The cover motif shows a nocturnal scene and depicts a cowboy diagonally from behind who has an electric guitar strapped to his back and is sitting on a horse . It's on a pass ; to the right of him is a weathercock , and he is surrounded by hills and trees . The moon casts a bright ray of light on the person. One can clearly see that on the way in front of him lies a city reminiscent of the cyberpunk genre, dominated by skyscrapers and neon lights .

criticism

7 received mixed or average reviews. The range of styles presented by Lil Nas X on the work was emphasized, and people were amazed at the proportion of grunge and alternative rock music. Positive voices praised the musician successfully capturing the zeitgeist of his generation. Nevertheless, none of the new titles would manage to get close to the successful single Old Town Road , and the interpreter would not be able to establish his own personality. Instead, he is still looking for what exactly he wants to represent in the music world. There was also disagreement about how well the artist coped with the styles that were new to him.
