Charts and reception

In contrast to Garbag's debut album, Version 2.0 was able to position itself better overall in the German-speaking area. In Germany, the album rose to number 4 and stayed in the charts for 25 weeks. For the first time, Garbage was able to place itself in 4th place in Austria and 17th in Switzerland.

The album was a long-lasting chart success in the United States, where it rose to number 13 and stayed in the charts for 70 weeks. In the United Kingdom version 2.0 stayed in the charts for over a year and reached number 1. It also reached the top position in France and New Zealand. Furthermore, the album was placed at number 22 in the Netherlands, at number 3 in the Flemish part of Belgium, at number 2 in the Walloon part of Belgium, at number 12 in Sweden, at number 6 in Finland, at number 4 in Norway and at number 4 in Australia 5th place.

In Allmusic album of Stephen Thomas Erlewine rated 3 out of 5 stars. Version 2.0 is neither a complete overhaul nor a special further development. Everything that Garbage brought success with her debut album can also be found on this album: Shirley Manson's seductive intensity, a strong sensitivity for pop music and a production somewhere between alternative rock and techno. The album lacks the directness of its predecessor. Although the songs are audible overall, the type of production ensures that the songs sound the same.

Uwe Schütte from Spiegel Online described version 2.0 as “a little more uniform and compact than its predecessor.” The slower songs such as Medication and The Trick is To Keep Breathing , which he sees as the highlight of the album , are particularly emphasized .
