Not Your Kind of People is the fifth studio album by the American-Scottish rock band Garbage . It was released on May 11, 2012 and was produced by the band on their own label, Stunvolume.
Creation and publication
Not Your Kind of People was the band's first studio album in seven years. The band had canceled the tour belonging to the album release in 2005 after the release of Bleed Like Me . The reasons were health problems and conflicts with the record company. The four members of the band devoted themselves to their own careers. Manson recorded his own album, which is previously unreleased, and took on small film roles and a leading role in the television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles . Guitarist Duke Erikson was also in the movie business, while Steve Marker was busy with his own music and Butch Vig was producer of albums for Jimmy Eat World , The Subways and Green Day .
There was renewed contact between Shirley Manson and Butch Vig at a funeral. This was followed by working together on a benefit single. Finally, in 2010, the band went back to the studio together to write new songs for the album. Unlike its predecessors, the album was not created in the Smart Studios co-founded by Vig, but in various studios in Los Angeles .
Before the album, the song Blood for Poppies was released on March 15, 2012 . The single reached number 17 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album was released between May 11 and 16, 2012 worldwide. It entered the top 10 in the United Kingdom and Australia and reached number 17 when it entered the American charts. The album reached number 15 in Germany and Switzerland, while it entered the charts at number 39 in Austria. Further placements were achieved in New Zealand with 32nd place, the Netherlands with 68th place, in Finland with 46th place, in Denmark with 35th place, in Spain with 29th place, in Italy with 16th place and in Belgium with 28th and 10th place.

Not Your Kind of People received mixed reviews from critics. It is often emphasized that garbage sounded like it did in the late 1990s, when it was most commercially successful. The album is particularly suitable for fans who have longed for a new Garbage album or who have never left the 90s behind.
Gunther Reinhardt from Rolling Stone complains that Garbage too seldom dared to try something new. Reiner Reitsamer expressed himself much more negatively on musikexpress.de . The album is "hard to beat in terms of insignificance" and characterized by "bland pieces" and "flat song titles like 'I Hate Love' and 'Beloved Freak'".
Automatic Systematic Habit , Not Your Kind of People , Blood for Poppies and Felt received positive mention . Automatic Systematic Habit , is "exemplary for Garbage's own symbiosis of rock and electronica [...] with much more power and frontal hardness", which can also be found in other songs on the album. Reinhardt highlights the song Not Your Kind of People , which "is developing from a muse variation into a spectacular Britpop-charged ode to the extraordinary," while Felt sounds "like My Bloody Valentine is covering Bowie's " Heroes " ."
