The Subways are a British indie rock band from Hertfordshire .

history

The band consists of Charlotte Cooper (bass) and the brothers Billy Lunn (guitar, vocals) and Josh Morgan (drums), who all grew up together. Like many other rock musicians, the two brothers did not get any lessons for their instruments, but mainly played and learned the songs of Nirvana as children .

The band name "The Subways" ( English for "underpasses") came up with the lead singer and guitarist of the band Billy Lunn. In his hometown he always fled to an underpass during school and work breaks when the hectic pace arose.

Her first album Young for Eternity was released in the UK on July 4th, 2005. In 2006, the band became well -known in German-speaking countries through a large-scale advertising campaign by Hugo Boss . The fans chose the title Oh Yeah for the soundtrack for a commercial , and the band presented the product's attitude to life. The record company Warner Music previously placed the song Rock & Roll Queen for a Rimmel campaign and provided the band's sound in the video game FIFA Street 2 . In 2007, the same song was played for the movie Die Hard 4.0 and in 2008 in the German movie Die Welle .

In 2009, The Subways performed at the Unplugged Concert of Sportfreunde Stiller in Munich and played Rock'n 'Roll Queen with the German trio. This song was also in the film Rock N Rolla by Guy Ritchie used from 2008 and as biasing the Pro7 sketch series Broken Comedy . The Subways appeared during the 7th episode of season 3 of the television series OC, California and played Rock & Roll Queen and Oh Yeah at the local music hangout 'the Bait Shop' . The episode ends with the song I Want to Hear What You Have Got to Say .

In February 2008, Billy and Charlotte separated after a relationship lasting several years. According to their own statement, this fact will not affect the continued existence of the band. In June 2008 the album All or Nothing was released . The tracks Girls & Boys and Alright were the first single releases from the record.

At the end of their performance at the Austrian FM4 Frequency Festival (August 2009) they announced that they would now start working on a next album. At the Hurricane Festival 2011 they already played three new songs and announced their album for September 2011. The first single It's a Party from the Money & Celebrity album could be downloaded for free from the band's homepage. Further single releases were We Don't Need Money to Have a Good Time , which is also available as a bonus track with a German refrain, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang .

On February 16, 2013, the band announced that they had started preparatory work for a fourth album in the studio. The album The Subways was released in the UK on February 6, 2015. It is also on the market in Germany and the band will play several concerts in Europe during 2015.

On April 15, 2016, the band released Acoustic Adventures at Yfe Studios, an EP with acoustic songs, including two cover versions.

On December 2nd, 2019 the band released a 15-year anniversary edition of "Young for Eternity" and "All or Nothing" with previously unheard and unreleased material on CD, as a download and in a limited vinyl edition. A special tour was planned for the release, on which the entire albums would be played in 2020. Most of the tour was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
