Walk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vazieren was a term used until the turn of the last century for traveling companions and traveling street musicians .

According to some (albeit partly contradicting) sources, the verb stood for unemployment and is probably related to today's word vacancy . In the comedies of Nestroy (1801–1862), traveling companions often play a leading role and even then make clear the social problems of prolonged unemployment. In Josefine Mutzenbacher's memoirs, Rudolf describes himself as (currently) walking.

From the wandering life of a baker

Ludwig Funder's diary , which his grandson Wolfgang Funder found in 1998 and gave to Böhlau-Verlag , gives a good insight into the situation at the end of the 19th century . It describes the 8-year-old waltz of a young confectioner from Graz via Vienna to Bavaria, Swabia, the Rhineland and Hesse. Through casual work he made his way to Hamburg and Munster, then via Holland to London , to the merchant navy and finally as a well-paid confectioner. When he returned to Hamburg with a serious nervous problem, he was cured in the Freemason Hospital, fell in love with penniless Julie in the suburb of Harburg and experienced a lengthy courtship that was finally accepted.

The fluent and interestingly written autobiography , which also tells of short trips to Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris, was published in 2000 under the title "From my boyish life". The following is quoted from the foreword by the editor Ernst Bruckmüller (pp. 22-23):
"In the hostels [specially set up for craftsmen] the journeymen should also find out where there was work . If he didn't get any, he had to move on. "

"The journeyman's wandering also sometimes became a habit, one could even speak of a kind of addiction. From the narrow perspective of close ties to a certain city, to house and family, the unbound, free life on the move appeared to be a tempting alternative. [ ...] Sadness when the hike came to an end - that was the end of the free life in general. The wandering , sometimes combined with work, sometimes with begging (the strictly forbidden "fencing") ... brought her Usually enough to refresh yourself if you weren't exactly picky ... "

Todays situation

The fact that many journeyman craftsmen and musicians used to have to combine looking for work with involuntary wandering is now defused for workers by social policy . However , it only partially applies to freelance artists at the beginning of their possible career. Some music students use a (temporary) activity as street or traveling musician to expand their artistic worldview.

With craftsmen and in the retail trade , activities that former Vazieranten accepted as casual work are sometimes still under the term sturgeon .
