It developed into a mega-seller.

In the USA , the album received two Grammy Awards in 1980 : one each for mixing and album cover .

history

description

Supertramp during the "Breakfast In Europe" tour, Olympiahalle Munich , Munich, 1980

For the recording of the LP "Breakfast in America", Supertramp (for the fourth time) came together in their successful line-up: Rick Davies (keyboards, vocals), John Helliwell (wind instruments, vocals), Roger Hodgson (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Bob Siebenberg (drums) and Dougie Thomson (bass guitar). The band was still active as a quintet . Gary Mielke (programming) and Richard John "Slyde" Hyde (trombone, tuba) supported them.

The band Supertramp recorded the album Breakfast in America - like its predecessor - in 1978 in the USA, this time in the famous studio The Village (also called Village Recorder ) in Los Angeles. It was produced by Supertramp and Peter Henderson . All songs were written by Hodgson and Davies, who each sang their own works.

With this album, the band made a musical change. After the progressive albums of the early years, Supertramp embarked on a more commercial path with this record, which for the first time also gave the group top positions in the international single charts. The biggest single success was the first release The Logical Song . Other internationally known hits were Goodbye Stranger , Take the Long Way Home and the theme song Breakfast in America. By the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million copies, making it one of the most successful albums in music history.

With some songs from the album Breakfast in America and Supertramp classics in their luggage, the band went on the Breakfast in America tour in 1979 , from which the live album Paris emerged the following year .

Album cover

The album cover by designer Mike Doud shows an ironically stylized view through an airplane window onto Manhattan ( New York City ). Actress Kate Murtagh , dressed as a waitress, embodies the Statue of Liberty, a glass of orange juice on the fingers of her right hand represents the torch. In her left arm she holds the menu that bears the title of the album. She stands in front of the indicated skyline of Manhattan with the twin towers of the (then) World Trade Center . The other skyscrapers of the southern tip of Manhattan are represented by coffee pots, cups, salt and pepper shakers and egg cartons. Breakfast is served on a plate, knives, forks and spoons form the pier systems. The back shows the band reading the newspaper at the bar at the American Breakfast .
