chronology
- Supertramp Indelibly Stamped (1971)

Supertramp is the first studio - album of the British Pop - / rock band Supertramp , previously to January 1970, from August 1969 Daddy said. Her debut album , which only bore the new group name , was released on July 14, 1970 (later also under the name Now and Then ) and was unsuccessful.

description

The young band was composed as follows when recording the album: The two composers and singers Rick Davies (organ, harmonica, piano, electronic piano, vocals) and Roger Hodgson (acoustic and bass guitar, cello, flageolet, vocals) were joined by Robert “ Bob “Millar (percussion, harmonica) and Richard Palmer (acoustic and electric guitar, balalaika, vocals), who later acted as lyricist for King Crimson . So she was a quartet .

The album Supertramp is influenced by progressive rock bands like Caravan , Yes and King Crimson ; Balalaika , cello and flageolet were used for the recordings and guitar sounds were experimented with. Music and lyrics are largely melancholy in character. The songs were composed by Davies and Hodgson and written by Palmer.

The A-side of the original LP begins with the half-minute Surely sung by Hodgson. It's a Long Road is characterized by Hodgson's falsetto voice and the harmonica played by Davies . Aubade is a 50-second organ instrumental piece played by Davies, which is seamlessly followed by I Am Not Like Other Birds of Prey , which, like the following Words Unspoken, is a slow, melodic piece - both sung by Hodgson. Maybe I'm a Beggar, with Palmer and Hodgson singing, begins with a flageolet introduction; the calm sound is contrasted by the hard e-guitar sounds in the bridge . The A-side ends with the short Home Again sung by Hodgson.

Its B-side begins with two impressive pieces that were sung in a duet by Davies and Hodgson: Nothing to Show, here dominated by a fast, psychedelic organ sound and memorable guitar riffs, and Shadow Song, which is melancholy-melodic with piano and flute accompaniment is set up. This is followed by Try Again, which lasts a little over 12 minutes and shows typical progressive rock experiments; the song sang Palmer and Hodgson alternately and it is characterized by tempo changes, the free use of drums and guitar and long instrumental passages. The record ends with a recapitulation by Surely, which Hodgson sang and which has a two-minute instrumental part in the final part.

The album, from which no singles were released and which was highly praised by critics, remained commercially unsuccessful like the following record Indelibly Stamped (1971). In the United States , where it was first published in 1977, it peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200 .
