Live '88 is the second live album by the British pop / rock band Supertramp . It was recorded during several concerts on the 1988 tour, the final tour with longtime Supertramp member and bassist Dougie Thomson . The record was released a year after the last Supertramp studio album " Free as a Bird " in October 1988 and sold sluggishly.

description

The album "Live '88" is the result of the 1988 tour during which Supertramp performed in these countries, for example: Belgium, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands and Spain.

From the classic lineup , which acted as a quartet like the last time on the album "Free as a Bird" , the tour included band head Rick Davies (piano, vocals), as well as long-time band members John Helliwell (saxophones, background vocals), Bob Siebenberg (drums ) and Dougie Thomson (bass guitar). As with the album “Free as a Bird”, Mark Hart (member of the band Crowded House since 1993) joined the group as the second singer, guitarist and keyboardist , who and not the songs written and sung by the band's founding and long-time band member Roger Hodgson Where I Stand (1987) sang on the live album . Although Hart is a good singer, this still causes unease among many Supertramp fans, as they miss Hodgson's falsetto vocals. The band was also joined by Brad Cole (keyboards, saxophones), Steve Reid (percussion) and Marty Walsh (guitar).

During the tour, Supertramp presented many of their classics written by Davies and Hodgson, and newer songs from their 1985 and 1987 studio albums. These included “Bloody Well Right”, “Crime Of The Century”, “You Started Laughing”, “From Now On ”,“ The Logical Song ”, Breakfast in America and Just Another Nervous Wreck as well as the newer songs It's Alright , Not The Moment and Free as a Bird , from the album Brother Where You Bound (1985), which are all in the CD version of the live album. Her classics School , Asylum , Rudy , Ain't Nobody but Me and Goodbye Stranger could also be heard at the shows , but they were like the 1985 songs Better Days and Cannonball as well as Where I Stand , I'm Beggin 'You and An Awful Thing to Waste , from the album Free as a Bird (1987), were not integrated into the live album.

But for the first time in their career, the band presented I'm Your Hoochie Cooche Man ( Willie Dixon , 1957) and Don't You Lie to Me ( Hudson Whittaker , 1944), two songs that did not come from their pen and immortalized them the live record (the former on LP and CD, the latter only on CD).

The only noteworthy chart placement of “Live '88” is that from Germany, where it rose to number 50 on the album charts.

After the 1988 tour, the band paused to release their next studio album, Some Things Never Change , until 1997 .
