Live in Paris '79 (film)
History and description
On August 27, 2012, almost exactly 32 years after the release of the live album, Live in Paris '79 was released on DVD and BD . The film material contained on it was recorded at the third of the four Paris concerts.
The impressively captured concert atmosphere with many Supertramp classics - including a live version of the orchestral Fool's Overture - Helliwell as master of ceremonies and the euphoric concert-goers, was recorded on 16 mm film. However, the footage remained in the band's archives and was later considered lost for a long time, until a copy was found in the barn of Supertramp's drummer Bob Siebenberg in Northern California in 2006. The film reels were in a disastrous condition and were partly soiled with cow dung. They were then digitally revised in several studios (see section Recording ).
The release of the film happened solely at the instigation of the Supertramp musicians Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg and John Helliwell and without the consent of the songwriters Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, who were performing together in Paris at the time. The latter reports on his website in an open letter regarding the publication of "... illegal and immoral methods ...", as well as of "... manipulations and deceptions ..." by his three former musicians who "... are trying to get Rick and me the songwriting rights to take away ... "and in his opinion achieved publication" ... through very questionable legal maneuvers ... ". Hodgson "cannot approve of the DVD because of its technical defects, editorial inaccuracies and its poor quality ...", he lets "... regrettably ..." know.
