" Give a Little Bit " is the first song on the Supertramp album Even in the Quietest Moments ... from 1977. The song was also released as a single in the same year and reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the highest position . In the band's home country, Great Britain, the song reached number 29 in the British singles chart . The single was re-released in 1992 to help fundraise for the ITV Telethon charity, but did not hit the charts at the time.

The song was written by Roger Hodgson when he was 19 years old. He didn't play the song to the band until five or six years after writing it. According to Hodgson, the song was inspired by The Beatles song “ All You Need Is Love ”, which was released during the Love and Peace movement of the 1960s.

The album named Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson as authors of the piece , although it was Hodgson's composition. Hodgson and Davies shared the writing rights to their pieces between 1974 and 1983, until Hodgson left Supertramp. The beginning of the play is marked by an acoustic 12-string guitar, by a Hohner - Clavinet , distorted by a Leslie Speaker is accompanied in the bridge of the piece.

Drummer Bob Siebenberg recalls that "Roger worked on this song for a while in Malibu. I heard the song in hotel rooms and places like that. He had the song on tape when I joined the band, so I was pretty familiar with the melody. We tried different things with the drums and it sounded good to run him along the snare drum ... It gave it something like the rhythm of a train. So everything was snare drum and bass drum , without Tomtom Fills or similar "

A short excerpt from the play is played in the 1978 film " Superman " in the death scene of Lois Lane . The song is not on the film's soundtrack.

In 2004 the song was covered by the band Goo Goo Dolls . The construction of the Goo Goo Dolls version differs significantly from the original. The song is also mainly played on an acoustic guitar, but the saxophone has been replaced by an electric bass .

The song can be heard in the closing scenes and in the credits of the Ricky Gervais film " Lügen macht erfinderisch " (2009).

The song was used in advertising for various campaigns, such as "Stouffer's" (2014), an American food brand; Coca-Cola used it for the “Share Happiness” spots and it was also used for the Christmas campaign by the supermarket chain “Target Australia” (2014).

Live versions

" Give a Little Bit " is still an integral part of Hodgson's live concerts, which he regularly gives worldwide as part of his world tours. Hodgson has repeatedly said in interviews that it was a wonderful feeling for him as an artist to end his concerts with this song: “I look down from the stage at the audience and people just hug and join in. It's a very unifying song with a simple and beautiful message. I am proud of that and I enjoy playing it to this day. "

After Hodgson left Supertramp, he played the song on almost all of his live performances. This was also the case when Hodgson went on tour with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 2001; a recording of this can be found on the album King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Ringo & His New All-Starr Band .

On Sunday 1st July 2007 Roger Hodgson played this song as the finale of his performance at the Concert for Diana , which took place at Wembley Stadium in London . Princess Diana loved the song and Hodgson said the following about the performance in her memory: “It was wonderful when the entire audience, including the princes, stood up to sing 'Give a Little Bit' with me. That was a magical moment. "

" Give a Little Bit " was also supposed to appear on the Supertramp Live album Paris , but this was refrained from as the band members found that all available recordings of the song were of unacceptable quality.

In 2010, Roger Hodgson released Classics Live , a collection of live recordings made during his Breakfast in America world tour. David Wild, editor at Rolling Stone magazine, wrote: "... an absolutely inspiring collection of live recordings of the most popular pieces that Roger Hodgson has written and sung to date." Classics Live "vividly reminds us of who gave us such classics as " Give A Little Bit ", " Take The Long Way Home ", " The Logical Song " and Dreamer and why these brilliant songs stand the test of time, both on a deeply personal level, but also quite universally Expression of longing, of love and our endless search for connection with people. " This recording of " Give A Little Bit " was made in Oslo, Norway.

After Hodgson left Supertramp, the band first resumed the song in their concerts when they went on their "One More For The Road" tour in 2002. The song was sung by Jesse Siebenberg. They also played the song during their "70-10" tour in 2010.
