Brother Where You Bound is the eighth studio album by the British pop / rock band Supertramp and their first without founding and long-time band member Roger Hodgson , who left the group in 1983. It was released around 2½ years after the studio album “… famous last words…” in May 1985 and contains the top 10 hit ( USA ) Cannonball, with Brother Where You Bound the longest song of the band (around 16½ minutes playing time) and four more Songs. The record, which is based on neo-progressive rock, sold very well , especially in Germany and Switzerland .

description

In the recording of the album Brother Where You Bound , the first studio album, Supertramp without Roger Hodgson recordings, the group acted like this: From their classic lineup , so this from Quintana to quartet had shrunk, were Rick Davies (keyboards, vocals) John Helliwell (saxophone), Bob Siebenberg (drums) and Dougie Thomson (bass guitar) still there. There were also numerous guest musicians who played in different compositions in the songs on the record (except No Inbetween and Ever Open Door ): Brian Banks (programming), Cha Cha (background vocals), Gary Chang (programming), David Gilmour (from Pink Floyd ; lead guitar), Scott Gorham (of Thin Lizzy , the band already supported on the 1974er- LP Crime of the Century , rhythm guitar), Anthony Marinelli (Programming), Scott Page (supported the group previously on the 1983er- Famous Last Words - tour ), Marty Walsh (guitar) and Doug Wintz (trombone).

All the songs on the album Brother Where You Bound were written and sung by Davies, who is the only remaining founding member and sole head of Supertramp after Hodgson's departure.

With the single Cannonball , the album contains a song that is atypically danceable and groovy for Supertramp, which achieved high chart positions , especially in the USA but also in Switzerland . The song is the only representative of the record on the best-of sampler The Autobiography of Supertramp , released the following year .

Saxophone sounds lead to Still in Love , which is followed by No Inbetween .

The subsequent Better Days has a bombastic intro. In the middle part of the song there is a short flute solo by Scott Page , who two years later acted for Pink Floyd . In the extended fadeout , which features a saxophone solo by John Helliwell , snippets of quotations, underlaid by reverb effects, can be heard from speeches by the four main actors of the 1984 US election campaign: Geraldine Ferraro and Walter Mondale (left channel) and George H. W. Bush and Ronald Reagan ( right channel).

The epic title track, the 16½-minute, extremely lyrical Brother Where You Bound , is the longest song in the band's history and consists of several parts and has many tempo changes. In it, Scott Gorham (of Thin Lizzy ) plays the rhythm guitar and David Gilmour ( Pink Floyd ) plays the main guitar. The song also has excerpts from the novel 1984 ( George Orwell ), and at one point the melody of the International can be heard in the background . A 10 minute demo recording of the song was made before Roger Hodgson left the band. It was originally planned to integrate the song into the previous album… famous last words… . Ultimately, the band members thought the song was too close to progressive rock and decided against integrating it into this album.

The album ends with the hymn-like Ever Open Door .

With a few songs from the technically sound album Brother Where You Bound and many Supertramp classics in their luggage, the band went on tour in 1985, but no live album emerged from this. The album Free as a Bird was released almost 2½ years after the record .
