Gym Class Heroes are an alternative hip-hop band from Geneva , New York .

The group was formed in 1997 by singer Travie McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley. Over time, guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo and bassist Ryan Geise were added. Gym Class Heroes released the self-produced albums Hed Candy (1999), Greasy Kids Stuff (2000) and For the Kids (2001), but the great success did not materialize. In 2004 Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy became aware of the group through the EP The Papercut Chronicles and signed them for his label Decaydance Records . In 2005 and 2006 GCH was part of the Warped Tour. On November 4, 2006, the album As Cruel as School Children was released in the USA. In December of that year, Cupid's Chokehold came out with a cover of the song Breakfast in America by Supertramp . For the single, which was already on The Papercut Chronicles and was first released in 2005, there was a collaboration with Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy (known for the background voice), as with other various pieces . It reached number 4 on the Billboard charts and position 3 in England. Instead of working with traditional hip-hop production instruments, GCH use live instruments similar to the artists Stetsasonic , The Roots , k-os and Crown City Rockers .

At the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards , the group won the Best New Artist category . They were also nominated in the Best Group category. They were also nominated in the Ultimate Urban category at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007 .

Band history

MC Travie "Schleprok" McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley became friends during physical education at their Geneva, New York high school. The name of the band reflects that. The band officially came together in 1997. The original line-up of the band played at birthday parties, clubs and festivals, which brought them to numerous locations in the Northeast, including two years on the Warped Tour (2003/2004). During 2004, guitarist Milo Bonacci was replaced by current guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo. Shortly before their first successes in mid-2005, bassist Ryan Geise left the band and was replaced by a friend, bassist Eric Roberts. The first small success was achieved with the self-produced album For the Kids , after lead singer Travie McCoy won the MTV Direct Effect MC Battle and appeared as a prize in Styles P's video Daddy Get That Cash .

Success in the indie scene

Gym Class Heroes became increasingly successful in the indie scene and developed more and more into a cult band. An online entertainment network had a particular interest and published a video tour blog. This was later followed by an interview on a show on the same network. These and other programs helped to make the band's work better known and to introduce them to a wider audience outside of the New York scene.

Decaydance Records

After Patrick Stump heard the song Taxi Driver from Fall Out Boy , he invited the band to one of his shows. They then came under contract with Pete Wentz 'label Decaydance Records, a sub-label of Fueled by Ramen . McCoy later said that, among other things, Patrick Stump's support and the family atmosphere had ultimately led to this.

Gym Class Heroes appeared again on the Warped Tours in summer 2005 and 2006. Another tour they finished with The All-American Rejects on November 29th in Las Vegas . With RX Bandits , k-os and POS , they headlined the Daryl Hall For President Tour '07 . They were also booked as the opening act for Gwen Stefanis "The Sweet Escape Tour" in Australia and New Zealand during July and August 2007.

After the Verizon Wireless Campus Tour with The Pack , they joined the Young Wild Things Tour with Fall Out Boy, Plain White T’s and Cute Is What We Aim For in October 2007.

Gym Class Heroes worked with R&B singer Kelly Rowland on a song called Daylight . The music video was produced by Jeremy Rall.

It was planned that Gym Class Heroes will be represented again on the Vans Warped Tour 2008 .
