Because a much-used crossing leads over the Ellmauer Tor with its unique backdrop, it is often referred to as the heart of the emperor . Seen from the south, e.g. from Ellmau or Going, it forms the unmistakable indentation in the Kaiser Mountains between Karlspitzen and Goinger Halt .

Routes

The Ellmauer Tor is the most important and most frequently used crossing in the Wilder Kaiser. Countless mountaineers come here on beautiful summer days.

The most famous route leads from the north, from the Stripsenjochhaus over the Eggersteig and through the Steinerne Rinne to the Ellmauer Tor. Alpine experience, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential for this route, even if it is well secured. Wearing a climbing helmet is advisable due to the risk of falling rocks.

The route from the south is no less popular, from the Wochenbrunner Alm either via the Gaudeamushütte via the Kübelkar or via the Gruttenhütte and the Jubiläumssteig (via ferrata) to the Ellmauer Tor. This path is easier (only one passage secured with a wire rope), but exposed to strong sun.

When you arrive at the gate, the surrounding rocky backdrop and the view to the south to the Hohe Tauern are fascinating. Incidentally, it is the starting point for climbing the Goinger hold and the Karlspitzen as well as access to the climbing routes at the Christaturm and the meat bank with the Herrweg .

In winter, the ascent through the Kübelkar is one of the most popular ski tours far and wide.
