Stankonia Big Boi and Dre Present… OutKast
(2001)

Stankonia is the fourth and hitherto most successful album of the US - Rapduos OutKast . It was released in 2000 and made it to number 2 on the Billboard charts for the third time in a row . In addition, OutKast made it known to a wider public in Germany for the first time, mainly through the single Ms. Jackson . With the song and the album, the duo were among the winners at the Grammy Awards in 2002 for the first time .

About the album

The title “Stankonia” is derived from the word “stink”, which is the original meaning of the word “ funk ”. In the intro , André 3000 describes Stankonia as "the place from which all 'funky thangs' come". It can therefore be understood both as an imaginary place and as the OutKasts recording studio , which also bears this name.

On the cover of the CD André and Big Boi are photographed standing in front of the flag of the United States . The flag has black stripes instead of red ("The black and white represents the deadness of America" - André 3000) and is based on the cover of the album There's a Riot Goin 'On by Sly & the Family Stone .

Commercial importance

The album marked the final breakthrough for OutKast in the USA. It sold over 530,000 times in the first week. In Germany, too, where Stankonia entered at number 6, the duo gained greater fame through the singles B.OB (Bombs Over Baghdad) , Ms. Jackson and So Fresh, So Clean . Ms. Jackson is OutKast's biggest hit in Germany to this day. The hit was at the top of the German single charts for two weeks . In the song André 3000 (who called himself Dre up to this album ) processes his separation from the singer Erykah Badu , with whom he has a son, by apologizing to her mother for the development of the relationship. The name "Jackson" , however, is fictitious selected.

Reviews

International

The Rolling Stone reviewer calls Stankonia one of the best albums of 2000 and compares it to albums by Funkadelic and Sly & the Family Stone. He gives it 4 out of 5 points and sums it up :

"Stankonia is a full-grown album. OutKast are on the brink of pulling off something that other hip-hop progressives like De La Soul haven't been able to do for any amount of time: Get played on the radio, keep it real, but also keep it right. "

It was also voted number 4 of the “Top 10 Albums of 2000” and in 2012 it was voted number 361 of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

According to the All Music Guide , which gave the album the highest number of points, Stankonia is stylistically “a trippy sort of techno-psychedelic funk”.

"(...) given the immense scope, it's striking how few weak tracks there are. It's no wonder Stankonia consolidated OutKast's status as critics' darlings, and began attracting broad new audiences: its across-the-board appeal and ambition overshadowed nearly every other pop album released in 2000. "

The hip-hop magazine The Source gave it almost the highest possible rating with 4.5 "Mics".

In 2006, the US news magazine TIME added Stankonia to its list of "All TIME 100 Albums" as one of only five albums recorded since 2000.

National

On laut.de received Stankonia 4 out of 5 points.

“With Stankonia you (...) are consistently continuing the path you have chosen. They even manage to make the record sound even more groovy and complex than its predecessors. (..) Outkast move more than ever to the side of the Godfathers of Funk George Clinton . "

The album received 5 out of 6 possible “crowns” from Juice .

In the Sounds edition on the subject of “ Black Music ” it is listed as one of only three albums released in the 2000s in the “The 50 most important albums” list. The reviewer calls it a "party and listening monster".
