ATLiens is the second music album by the US rap duo OutKast , released in 1996 . In their homeland, the album reached number 2 on the Billboard charts and was thus far more successful than its predecessor Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik . It received four out of five “Mics” from US hip-hop magazine The Source and was included in its list of “100 Best Rap Albums”.

About the album

For ATLiens , Big Boi and André 3000 (then still Dre) produced for the first time themselves, including their first Top 20 single Elevators (Me & You) (12th place on the Billboard Hot 100 ). Other singles were the title track (number 35) and Jazzy Belle as a remix featuring singer and producer Babyface (number 52).

The sound of the album is quieter and more cryptic compared to Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik , the G-Funk influences have disappeared. Even more than in the debut, the songs are based on melodic live instrumentation (especially guitar and electric bass ). The lyrics, primarily by Dre, are more introverted and for the most part dispense with the previous "gangster" attitude. According to RapReviews.com , the album should be heard in complete darkness.

The title of the album is a suitcase word from " Atlanta " ("ATL" for short), the hometown of OutKast, and " Aliens " to illustrate the extra-terrestrial symbolism of the album. It probably also refers to the outsider role that rappers from Atlanta and the southern states still held at that time.

The title's extraterrestrial reference was carried over to the rest of the album. Particularly noteworthy is the booklet, which contains an 18-page comic in which OutKast and LA Reid patronize. There is also a profile of Dre and Big Boi. Lyrics are not printed.
