Idlewild (2006) -

Idlewild is the sixth music album of the US - rap group OutKast . It accompanies the eponymous film Idlewild by Bryan Barber, in which the duo plays the leading roles, as a soundtrack , but can also be viewed as an album in its own right.

About the album

Originally, Idlewild was supposed to be released in November 2005, but the release date was postponed several times because some songs were only created after the filming of the film Idlewild was finished.

The music genres on Idlewild range from Dirty South ("Hollywood Divorce") to R'n'B ("Peaches", "In Your Dreams"), Soul ("Mutron Angel", "Dyin 'to Live"), Swing (" When I Look in Your Eyes ”), jazz (“ Makes No Sense At All ”) and blues (“ Idlewild Blue ”) to psychedelic rock (“ A Bad Note ”). Some of the songs contain parts of dialogues from the film. André 3000 and Big Boi can only be heard as a duo on three of the songs, most of the songs were produced separately.

Singles

Although only released as a single for download, the song Mighty "O" became the album's most successful single, only ranking 77th on the Billboard Hot 100 . Morris Brown was then officially released as the first single, on the Internet at the same time as Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me) . The single just entered the Billboard charts at number 95. The single reached number 43 in the British charts , number 57 in the Swiss charts and number 98 in the German single charts.Idlewild Blue , the third single, was 100 in the USA, and 55 in England . The fourth and fifth singles, Hollywood Divorce and The Train were only released as records for US and UK clubs.

Mighty "O" and Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me) were nominated for a Grammy in 2007 in the categories Best Rap Performance By Duo or Group and Best Urban / Alternative Performance .

reception

successes

Idlewild was as successful as ATLiens and Aquemini with number 2 on the Billboard charts and two platinum awards in the USA, but could not build on the successes of Stankonia and Speakerboxxx / The Love Below . In Germany it reached number 33, in Switzerland it was the most successful full-length player from OutKast with number 4, but only placed in the charts for six weeks.

Reviews

The album was generally more positively criticized than Idlewild , the film. The e-zine laut.de, for example, praises the enormous range of musical styles and gave the album 4 out of 5 points, but also says that “hip-hop purists” would “bite their teeth” on Idlewild .

The US magazine Rolling Stone thinks that OutKast would have been forced by the enormous success of Speakerboxxx / The Love Below to release another album as a duo instead of pursuing a solo career. She compares Idlewild to Fleetwood Macs Tusk and Parade by Prince , which has a similar concept to Idlewild . Both were also commercially risky successors to an enormously successful album. The magazine gave the album 4 out of 5 points:

"(...) the OutKast group identity might be over, but together they turn their run-of-the-mill superstar alienation into the deeply eccentric richness of Idlewild ."

According to the All Music Guide , the album cannot compete with previous OutKast works, which is why it only received 2.5 out of 5 points. In addition, the rarity of André 3000's rape and the increasing presence of his vocal interludes are criticized.
