Killer Mike (born April 20, 1975 in Atlanta , Georgia ; real name Michael Render ) is an American rapper from the OutKast area and belongs to the second generation of the Dungeon Family . He is considered a representative of the hardcore and dirty south rap.

Career

Render began his rap career under the name "Skunk" (skunk). He was given the name Killer Mike in high school by a local DJ after he dominated a rap contest. The general public first became aware of Killer Mike when he made a guest appearance on OutKast's single The Whole World . His own breakthrough came about two years later with the song ADIDAS , on which Big Boi took part. The corresponding album Monster reached the top 10 in the USA. In 2010 he took part in the American MTV show "Made" as a coach and got the self-proclaimed "nerd" James Padgett to become a real rapper within four weeks .

Political commitment

Killer Mike grew up as a child of politically active parents. In his youth, he was involved in anti-violence and educational programs for children in Atlanta. A spontaneous speech on November 24, 2014 caused a sensation when, in the event of Michael Brown's death, the grand jury decided not to initiate proceedings. Killer Mike opened his concert in Saint Louis, Missouri in the evening with a tear-choked address in which he referred to his children and what fear he has now for them. A video recording of the speech reached a national audience in the United States. The same applies to a speech on the death of George Floyd in 2020, in which he called on protesters to stop the riots in Atlanta . For him, constructive steps towards a possible solution would lie in the strategic organization and participation in elections.

Killer Mike was politically active when he supported the US presidential candidacy of the Democrat Bernie Sanders from 2015 . Killer Mike primarily cited Sander's drive to reinstate the Voting Rights Act . According to Killer Mike, Sanders is the first politician in Mike's lifetime whose program acts directly as a continuation of the philosophy of Martin Luther King . He publicly announced his support several times and made a number of Youtube videos with Sanders that received over a million views.
