content

In the song André 3000 processes his separation from the singer Erykah Badu , with whom he has a son. With "Ms. Jackson “is Badu's mother, to whom André apologizes and to whom he tries to explain how the separation came about. But he emphasizes his always good intentions towards their daughter and the perception of his responsibility towards their child. The name "Jackson" is fictitious and does not refer to Badu's mother.

"(...) it's kinda like a personal song, but then at the same time, it's not like a real-life story like that. But it's kinda coming from me, wondering, like, after the pain of a relationship, after things don't work out too tough, I wonder how a baby's mama's mama feels. "

- André 3000

Big Boi's two stanzas also revolve around the separation from the mother of his child and the hostility of her mother towards him. He does not try to reconcile with them, however, but closes with the words: "You can go on and get the hell on / You and your mama".

Style and instrumentation

Ms. Jackson is stylistically classifiable in hip-hop, but unusually melodic and heavily orchestrated for the genre . The Wedding March by Richard Wagner is played again and again, but replaced by a sad-sounding melody. Also Congas used, but played backwards. The bass is by Aaron Mills of Cameo played the guitar by André 3000. Strawberry Letter 23 by The Brothers Johnson is sampled .

Video

André 3000 tries to renovate a house at the beginning of the video, which does not succeed, while Big Boi tries to repair a car. As the video progresses, the weather gets worse, a storm is approaching and it is raining heavily, which destroys the polish of the car paint . In addition, the car's electrical system catches fire. Meanwhile, the house begins to rain in more and more places - Big Boi is trying to repair the roof - and the power goes out from time to time. In the end, the roof collapses under the pressure of the rain and a bright blue sky becomes visible.

In the course of the video, animals (dogs, cats, an owl, a turtle) can be seen singing along with parts of the text or moving their heads to the beat .

The video stands as a metaphor for a broken relationship in general (or that of André 3000 and Erykah Badu in particular), which André and Big Boi are trying to save at the beginning, but in the end realize that the separation is the only way out Sunshine that can be seen through the broken roof symbolizes.

The video for Ms. Jackson was shot in late November 2000 by F. Gary Gray , who is also responsible for the video for Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik .
