Gaucho is the seventh studio album by the American jazz rock band Steely Dan and was released in 1980.
General
The recordings for "Gaucho" were the culmination of Steely Dan's perfectionism. At least 42 different musicians spent more than two grueling years in the studio. Her record label's budget was well exceeded. There are calculations that around 1000 hours of session took place in three different studios in Los Angeles and New York for this album. For a short guitar solo entitled "Time Out of Mind" several world-class guitarists were worn out until Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were satisfied with the result of Mark Knopfler . Shortly before the work on the album was finished, there was a disaster: A studio assistant accidentally copied over the tape with the finished track "The Second Arrangement". Becker and above all Fagen were inconsolable, tried again laboriously to record the song again, but then decided to replace it with the title "Third World Man". The title came largely from the "Aja" recording sessions.
After "Gaucho", Fagen and Becker put Steely Dan on hold. The next album was only released 20 years later in 2000.
Private situation
Becker's increasing drug consumption burdened the work on the album. Becker was also hit by a car. During his hospital stay and the six-month recovery, Fagen continued working and coordinated with Becker over the phone. On January 30, 1980, Becker's friend Karen Roberta Stanley died of a drug overdose at his home. Her family sued Becker for $ 17.5 million in January 1981 for becoming addicted. The court dismissed the lawsuit.
reception
Some fans and critics found "Gaucho" too smooth and not very varied. Harmoniously complex chord changes from earlier Steely Dan songs are less represented on the album. Like Aja before, "Gaucho" was awarded a Grammy.
Track list
All songs are by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, unless otherwise stated. Keith Jarrett found similarities in the melody of the title track to his composition "Long As You Know You're Living Yours" from his album "Belonging". After a legal battle, Becker and Fagen also had to add Jarrett's names as composers.
