reception

Allmusic critic Thomas Erlewine wrote:

Alive in America is nice, but it doesn't offer any new insight into Steely Dan as a musician or Becker and Fagen as a songwriter. It's fun while it lasts, but doesn't leave lasting memories. "

- Thomas Erlewine

The album received a very critical review in Rolling Stone and only received two out of five stars. Although the reunion tour was successful in 1993/94, the album was flawless sounding and meaningless. The polished, polished versions of ten gems from the 1970s (and a superfluous piece from Becker's current solo album) would hardly be able to show again what the subversive influence of the band on pop and jazz was.
