21 is the second album by the British singer Adele . It was released on January 19, 2011. The album reached number one in the charts in the entire German-speaking area, but also in Adele's homeland, the United Kingdom . With over 5 million units sold, it is the best-selling album of the 21st century to date and the fourth most successful album ever.

The album contains eleven songs, and Adele contributed the lyrics to ten contributions. The album cover shows a close-up of Adele's face, including "Adele" in the same font and size and the album title "21". The picture is gray, the lettering is white and green.

The album entered the German-language charts at the beginning of February and reached number one in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. 21 also peaked in several other European countries, including Adele's homeland, the United Kingdom, as well as the United States and Canada.

Adele is the first British female artist to sell three million albums in the UK in one year. On November 30, 2011 it was announced that 21 was the most downloaded album in Germany to date with over 140,000 downloads. At the Grammy Awards 2012 , Adele received 6 trophies, including the categories “Recording of the Year”, “Record of the Year” and “Best Song of the Year” ( Rolling in the Deep ).

Album title

The album title 21 refers to Adele's age at the time she composed and recorded the tracks, as on her debut album 19 .

Single releases

The single Rolling in the Deep was released on November 29, 2010. In Germany and Switzerland the song reached number one, in Austria and Great Britain it rose to number three. The song also became a number one hit in the USA.

On February 15, 2011, the second single was released with Someone Like You . In the UK, the song went straight to number one after a live performance at the Brit Awards . Adele set a record that was last achieved by the Beatles in 1964 when she was twice in the top 5 in both the singles and album charts. In the US, Someone Like You became Adele's second number one hit.

Set Fire to the Rain was chosen as the third worldwide and in Central Europeas the second singlebefore Someone Like You . The song reached the top 10 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland only through downloads. In Belgium and the Netherlands the song becamea number one hitlike Rolling in the Deep . It was released as the third single in the US and, like Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You, reached number 1 in the US singles chart, making ittheir third number one hit.

The fourth single was the song Rumor Has It . It was released on November 5, 2011 and rose to number 16 in the US.

21 received consistently positive reviews. laut.de awarded three out of five stars and was particularly pleased with Rolling in the Deep . The song is "more than splendid as an opener" and shows a lot of variety. CDStarts compared Adele to Kate Nash , Amy Winehouse and Duffy , claiming that Adele easily outpaced them with this album. LetMeEntertainYou awarded all five possible stars and selected 21 as the CD highlight of the year.
