In both countries the piece entered the charts after Gwyneth Paltrow sang it on the Glee series . In Australia it reached number 81 and in the British singles charts number 62. In Germany, the title in the interpretation of Katja Friedenberg was placed at number 86 after she sang it in January 2012 in the talent show The Voice of Germany . In February 2013, the original version of Adele hit the sales charts in Germany.

The piece, which describes the falling apart of a love affair, is a piano ballad that starts slowly and becomes a "theater-pop hymn with Broadway- inspired instruments".
