52 ^nd Street is the sixth studio album by American musician Billy Joel . It was released in October 1978 and was also the artist's first album to hit number one on the Billboard album charts . Joel also received his third and fourth Grammy Awards for the LP . It was also 52 ^nd Street the first music album worldwide in 1982, which as a compact disc was released.

Emergence

Jazz influences can be heard for the first time on the album, for example in the title Zanzibar , which pays homage to the mid-20th century New York jazz district of the same name and on which jazz musician Freddie Hubbard also gives a guest performance as a trumpeter. The album title 52 ^nd Street refers to the 52nd Street of the West Side in Manhattan , was in at that time Joel's music label and due to their numerous in former times and legendary jazz clubs known as "Swing Street".

52 ^nd Street first appeared in October 1978 at Columbia Records , with My Life (3rd place), Big Shot (14th place) and honesty (24th) reached three singles, the Top 100 of the US singles chart. The critics also rated the album mostly positive, at the Grammy Awards in 1980 the record was named album of the year.

In the published 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time the music magazine Rolling Stone ranked 52 ^nd Street to 352nd place. With the introduction of the compact disc in 1982 by Sony Music Entertainment , the record was also the world's first album to be released as a music CD.
