Streetlife Serenade is the third studio album by the American musician Billy Joel and also the artist's second collaboration with Columbia Records .

publication

After the great success of its predecessor Piano Man , "Streetlife Serenade" was released on October 11, 1974. However, the album could not repeat the success of its predecessor and also received poorer reviews, which initiated the beginning of a tense relationship between Joel and the critics and the music industry. Joel's criticism of the entire business becomes clear in The Entertainer , in which the musician makes fun of the insensibility of those responsible in relation to the work and the feelings of the artists. In this song, Joel also makes direct reference to the release of his single Piano Man , which was shortened by those responsible on the grounds that it was too long before the release:

"I am the entertainer, I've come to do my show. / You've heard my latest record, it's been on the radio. / It took me years to write it, they were the best years of my life. / It was a beautiful song but it ran too long. / If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit. / So they cut it down to 3:05 "

After its release as a single, The Entertainer reached 34th place in the US singles chart.
