Doug Stegmeyer
Doug Stegmeyer (born December 23, 1951 in New York City ; † August 25, 1995 there ) was an American rock musician who was best known as the longtime bassist of Billy Joel .
Career
In high school , Doug Stegmeyer met Russell Javors and Liberty DeVitto , with whom and Howard Emerson he formed the band Topper . The group performed with songs that Javors had written in the 1970s. During this time, Billy Joel became aware of Topper . Since Joel needed a bass player for his Streetlife Serenade Tour , he invited Doug Stegmeyer to play in his band. This then persuaded Javors and DeVitto to also play for Joel, so that Topper became The Billy Joel Band . Doug Stegmeyer was part of the formation from 1976 to 1989. He has also been involved in productions for Debbie Gibson and Hall & Oates .
On August 25, 1995 Stegmeyer committed in his hometown of New York suicide .
