... and when the last tire bursts is an American film drama from 1983. The film is based on true events and tells the story of racing driver Shirley Muldowney, who was the first woman to win a dragster race.

action

In 1956, the waitress Shirley Roqud married the auto mechanic Jack Muldowney. Jack buys a gas station, Shirley becomes a housewife. The couple have a son. Jack's hobby is car racing. In addition, he meets friends on lonely country roads, where at night they race in their souped-up sports cars in the light of the lanterns. One day Shirley asks her husband to let her go. She drives and wins the race. More victories follow. The professional racing driver Don Garlits gives Shirley the idea to get sponsors. Jack is skeptical because a housewife as a racing driver is not taken seriously at the time. But Jack agrees to build her a dragster .

In 1966 the time has come. Shirley only needs three more signatures for her NHRA license . Garlits signs because he sees this as an opportunity to make racing even more popular. Racing driver colleague Connie Kalitta also signs and gets a third racing driver to sign as well. Shirley qualifies for her first race, setting a course record straight away. When Connie later makes an advances after dinner, he is turned away with a slap in the face.

Shirley celebrates success. Connie wants to switch to another racing class. Shirley wants to buy Connie's car and end the season with it. For Jack, this is proof that he lost his wife to the sport and files for divorce. Connie and Shirley are now becoming a couple, even if Connie is always after other women. In 1973 there was a serious accident in which Shirley was seriously injured and her car was completely destroyed. The NHRA suspends Connie for being too supportive of Shirley. Shirley now wants to switch to Connie's class. He becomes her team boss. In 1976 she won the first national NHRA race and became world champion in 1977.

Connie's infidelity leads Shirley to split up with him and kick him off the team. Furious, he lets himself be registered with the NHRA again. With only a few sponsors and an inexperienced team, the next two years were a failure for Shirley. But in 1980 she is back at the top. In the final race for the NHRA championship there is a duel with Connie. Shirley wins and makes up with Connie. Jack, who watched the race on TV, congratulates her privately.
