Laurence Rosenthal

Laurence Rosenthal (born November 4, 1926 in Detroit , Michigan , USA ) is an American composer for film scores .

Life

Laurence Rosenthal graduated from the Eastman School of Music and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris for two years . His career also led him to Salzburg , where he was engaged as a conductor at the Mozarteum . During World War II , Rosenthal fought in the United States Air Force and, thanks to his talent, was able to rise to the position of composer for educational and propaganda films for the US Army.

After the war, Rosenthal settled in New York City and began composing the music for plays. In 1955 Rosenthal made his debut as the composer of his first feature film, the US western Yellowneck . Rosenthal is a sought-after composer who has composed for over 110 films and television series in his 50-year career. He was nominated twice for an Oscar and just as often for the Golden Globe Award - but an award was always denied to him.

In 2006 he was honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers with an ASCAP Award for Lifetime Achievement.
