Licht im Dunkel is an American drama from 1962. The screenplay is based on the autobiographical novel by the deaf-blind writer Helen Keller .

action

Anne Sullivan is a visually impaired teacher. In 1887 she arrived in the town of Tuscumbis, Alabama . She is supposed to teach the blind twelve-year-old Helen Keller, who is also deaf, the language by touch. Annie realizes that the only way to help Helen is by removing her from the influence of her pampering mother and dominant father.

In fact, Annie is allowed to retire to a garden shed with Helen for two weeks to work with her. But Helen, who has a mind of her own, refuses to cooperate. At least after two weeks she learned to dress herself, to eat with the cutlery and to recognize the alphabet by touch. But she cannot understand that the words she spells are the names of the objects she touches. Annie asks for another week, but the parents want the child back in the house. Here Helen reverts to her original wildness.

When Helen spills water while eating, Annie forces her to refill the pitcher on the pump in the front yard. Helen feels the water flow over her hands. She now realizes that what she is feeling is WATER. She takes Annie's hands and spells the word. Helen runs around enthusiastically and spells the names of everything she touches: pump, tree, porch, bell, father, mother. Finally, she identifies Annie by spelling out the word teacher.
