Inga Swenson (born December 29, 1932 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American actress .

Career

Inga Swenson made her television debut in 1957. Numerous television films and series followed. For her portrayal in the series Benson , in which she played the strict housekeeper Miss Gretchen Wilomena Kraus of German origin from 1979 to 1986 , she received three Emmy and one Golden Globe nominations. In Germany she was also known for her role in the television miniseries Fackeln im Sturm , in which she played the mother of George Hazard ( James Read ) in 1985 and 1986 .

Especially in the early stages of her career, she also appeared in cinema productions. Her role as the mother of the deafblind Helen Keller in the award-winning drama Licht im Dunkel , directed by Arthur Penn, will be remembered . In between, Swenson performed repeatedly on Broadway , such as in Baker Street in 1965 . She retired from acting in 2000.

Private

Inga Swenson lives in Los Angeles and has been married to the composer Lowell Harris since 1953. The couple have two sons. Son Mark Harris is a film editor. Son James Harris died in a motorcycle accident in 1987 at the age of 26.
