action

The minor Helen Keller has been deaf-blind since she was two years old due to meningitis . Since she can no longer communicate, she often has tantrums ; the parents, Captain and Kate Keller, do not have access to their daughter. They have therefore almost completely lost their hope of finding a way out of the child's isolation. As a last resort, they see support from the teacher Anne Sullivan , who is supposed to communicate with Helen and educate her in this way.

Initially, Anne had serious problems getting to know Helen. She is, as Anne says, spoiled and spoiled. The teacher is of the opinion that she cannot make any progress in her work with Helen because she knows no boundaries and rules due to the constant pity of the family and uses her outbursts of anger to get her way. Small successes would be thwarted again and again. The parents are insecure and want to stop the therapy. However, Anne is convinced that she can help Helen if she could live with her completely alone.

The teacher discovers a small house very close to the house. She wants to convince the parents to let her live there with Helen for a while. After much persuasion, she succeeds in getting her parents' permission to live alone with the child for two weeks. They take Helen on a two-hour carriage ride to make her think she is far from home. The teacher lives alone with the girl for the next 14 days and teaches her successfully.

On the last day the father comes to pick up his daughter. Anne tries to convince him, however, that she can keep Helen a little longer, because she can teach her a lot more and wants to get Helen to understand the meaning of the words. However, Captain insists on taking his child with him that day because his wife can no longer live without her daughter. He also argues that Helen already had much better manners.

While eating together in the Keller family home, Helen had a fit of rage in which she spilled water from a jug. Anne takes her to a water pump in the garden to teach Helen that she has to refill the jug herself. When she feels the water pouring over her hands and the teacher spells the word "water" in her hand, she suddenly drops the jug and tries to pronounce the word. Anne is thrilled and spells the word several more times. Then both run excitedly through the garden. Helen reaches for whatever she can grasp, which the teacher immediately spells for her.
