In archaeological research, the emergency name Pisticci painter is used to describe a Lukan vase painter who worked in the third third of the 5th century BC. Was active.

The Pisticci painter stands at the beginning of the Lukan vase painting. It owes its emergency name to the town of Pisticci , which is about 20 km west of Metapont . Together with the Cyclops Painter and the Amykos Painter , he seems to have run a workshop in which he took the lead. They decorated all mostly inconspicuous vase shapes, such as bell craters . The spectrum of representations included themes from the Dionysian realm, everyday scenes such as warriors or athletes, and scenes of persecution in which mythological figures stalk women.

The Pisticci painter probably adopted his vessel shapes, pictorial themes and ornaments directly from the Attic vase painters who worked at the same time . The Christie Painter , the Achilles Painter , the Barclay Painter, and the Centauromachy Painter in the Louvre were particularly influential. His early works are often difficult to distinguish from Attic works. However, he quickly developed a personal style, which was particularly evident in the depiction of the folds of the robes and the boys' cloaks . It is also noticeable that the black varnish loses its silky sheen, which is typical of Attic vases, and appears less intense and duller. The Pisticci painter rarely shows more than two or three figures on his favorite shape, the bell crater. Coat boys can be found on almost all the backs of the vases. His ornaments mostly follow a uniform scheme. A laurel wreath with round and occasionally bordered leaves is usually found under the edge and above the picture. There is often a meandering band with cross plates under the picture . Especially in his early work there are hydrias , which mostly show women running or standing. In its later phase it usually shows three or even four figures on its bell craters. An unusual vase from this period shows a rare mythological theme: Laocoon in Troy , his wife attacks the snake that wrapped around the statue of Apollo , one of the sons has already been killed.

The workshop in Metapont lasted for a long time. In the second generation it was shaped by the Anabates painter , the Krëusa painter and the Dolon painter .
