Pisticci is an Italian commune in the province of Matera in the Basilicata region .

Location and dates

17,432 inhabitants live in Pisticci (as of December 31, 2019). The place is 68 km south of Matera . The neighboring municipalities are Bernalda , Craco , Ferrandina , Montalbano Jonico , Montescaglioso , Pomarico and Scanzano Jonico .

About a kilometer away is the 1000 year old pilgrimage site of Madonna del Casale.

About five kilometers north of Pisticci, in the district of Pisticci Scalo, there is a train station on the Battipaglia – Metaponto railway line and the Pisticci airfield .

history

The first settlements in the area of ​​Pisticci by Önotrians go back to the 10th century BC. BC back. This is indicated by numerous necropolises .

Even before the outbreak of World War II , there was an agricultural colony in Pisticci. After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Pisticci , mainly for political opponents , for members of the Slavic minorities in the border provinces of Italy and for Yugoslavs from the areas occupied and annexed by Italy. The Italian anti-fascists had often already served long prison terms when they were transferred to Pisticci. Poles and Greeks were also interned in Pisticci . In June 1941 there were 571 internees in Pisticci. In September 1942 there were 997 and in July 1943 866. The internees were used for agricultural activities. In September 1943, the Allied forces took over the site and set up a refugee camp on it.
