Location and dates
Today, 907 inhabitants live on the 96 km² of the municipality of Aliano (as of December 31, 2019). The place Aliano lies on a steep mountain ridge in the middle of the so-called Calanchi (fold mountains) between the river valleys of the Sauro and the Agri . Due to the loamy subsoil, the houses are always threatened by erosion . The municipality borders the municipalities of Gorgoglione and Stigliano ( Province of Matera ) and Missanello, Roccanova and Sant'Arcangelo ( Province of Potenza ).
history
The name of the place derives from the Latin Praedium Allianum , the estate of the Roman Allius.
Due to its proximity to the Agri and Sinni rivers , Aliano has been an important trading center between the Greeks , Etruscans and Enotrians since ancient times , as evidenced by the discovery of a necropolis from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Is occupied.
Carlo Levi
The place became famous through the book Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (" Christ only came to Eboli ", 1945) by Carlo Levi , who wrote his experiences and impressions during his exile in 1935/1936 in what he called 'Gagliano' for reasons of discretion Describes place. The book was partially filmed in 1978 by Francesco Rosi at the original locations.
Culture
In the 1990s, Aliano was proclaimed Parco Letterario Carlo Levi ("Carlo Levi Literature Park") under the auspices of UNESCO . Today a Museo Carlo Levi with photos and documents, a museum with 20 paintings by Levi in the former town hall and a multimedia show in Levi's former home commemorate the famous exile. In addition, the folkloric Museo della Civiltà Contadina (“Museum of Rural Culture”) shows evidence of the arduous rural life described by Levi. Levi's grave can be viewed in the cemetery.
