history

Montepeloso ( Mons Pilosus ) was the name of the place until 1895. The first mention (as Irtium ) relates to the destruction by the Saracens in 988. Archaeologically, a settlement can be traced back to the 4th or 3rd century BC. Prove. In 1133 the city was destroyed by Roger II , but was soon rebuilt. The current name comes from Irtium , which is associated with hirsutus (prickly, hairy).

A bishop of Montepeloso is deposed in 1059 by Pope Nicholas II for simony , after which the archbishop of Acerenza unites Montepeloso with the diocese of Tricarico without papal consent . A separate bishop was not confirmed again until 1123 by Pope Calixt II . After the city was destroyed by King Roger, the diocese was also dissolved. Efforts to rebuild it at the end of the 12th century are unsuccessful, the spiritual direction is in the hands of the priors of the monastery of S. Maria, which Roger II had subordinated to the French abbey of Chaise-Dieu . The diocese was not reestablished until 1460, initially united with Andria , and from 1479 independently and directly subordinated to the Pope. In 1818 the diocese of Montepeloso was merged with the diocese of Gravina .

The abbot of S. Maria is mentioned in the Catalogus baronum as the fiefdom of the Count of Tricarico.

A Franciscan convent (OFM) was built on the site of the Norman-Staufer fort after 1531 , but older buildings can still be seen.
