Pomarico is a southern Italian municipality in the province of Matera in Basilicata with 4001 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Basilicata region. The name is said to come from the Latin Pomi ager , which means “fertile soil”.
geography
location
Pomarico is a small town that, like many of its neighboring communities ( Bernalda , Ferrandina , Montescaglioso , Miglionico , Pisticci ) is located on a ridge. The Basento flows at the foot of the hill, the water level of which often falls sharply in summer.
Expansion of the urban area
The remains of a settlement from pre-Christian times have been discovered at the gates of Pomarico. This settlement is called Pomarico Vecchio, which means old Pomarico. The historic city center of what is now Pomarico is around 3 km away on a hill that stretches to another hill, the Aldo Moro new housing estate . There is also the only industrial area.
climate
In summer, subtropical temperatures prevail in Pomarico, in winter wet cold and snow dominate.
history
The city's beginnings go back to the 5th century BC.
In the 1960s and 70s, many residents left the city to come to Germany as guest workers . In the 1980s the city was badly damaged by an earthquake .
The current mayor of Pomaricos is Francesco Mancini (Centrosinistra).
Culture and sport
Attractions
The sights of the city include the various churches, the excavations of Pomarico Vecchio and the historic city center as well as the Palazzo . The excavations prove the Greek-Hellenistic origin of the place.
religion
The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. There is a small evangelical congregation that, curiously enough, celebrates its services in a garage.
Saint Michael is the patron saint of Pomarico . The largest of the numerous churches in the village is dedicated to him. From May 7th to 9th, a festival will take place in his honor in the city, which is comparable to a German parish fair .
Culinary specialties
The culinary specialty is salsiccia , a handmade and sliced sausage, and gnumureddrë ("gomitoletti"), meat-wrapped and grilled offal.
Sports
In sport, the football club FC Pomarico represents its city in the regional league.
Infrastructure, economy and transport
There are doctors, pharmacies, a small supermarket, various shops (electrical and household items, butchers, bakeries, tobacco shops, etc.), a petrol station and several bars in the village. In addition, a weekly market takes place every two weeks. There is also a kindergarten, a primary school, a cemetery, a post of the Carabinieri and the Polizia Municipale .
The city suffers from the very high unemployment that it has in all of southern Italy. The main occupation is in the craft sector (painter, bricklayer).
Pomarico can be reached by car via Strada Stadale 7 racc. ( Via Appia ) coming from Matera, Bari. Coming from Potenza, Pomarico can be reached via the SS 407 , an expressway leads in the direction of Montescaglioso and on the Ionian coast to Metaponto . The only public bus runs every half hour (from morning to evening) from the Aldo Moro district to the city center.
