Miglionico is a municipality in the province of Matera in the Italian region of Basilicata .

Location and dates

Miglionico has 2447 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The place is located 21 km southwest of Matera . The neighboring municipalities are Ferrandina , Grottole , Matera, Montescaglioso and Pomarico .

history

Miglionico was founded in the 6th century BC. Founded by the Greeks. The city was named after the Greek wrestler Milon , who served as General Crotons in 510 BC. Fought victoriously against Sybaris .

Attractions

The castle Castello del Malconsiglio from the 8th / 9th centuries is well worth seeing. Century, the seat of the barons in the uprising against King Ferdinand of Naples in 1481. Also worth seeing is the polyptych painted by Cima da Conegliano in the church of the former monastery.
