Garaguso is a municipality in the province of Matera in the Italian region of Basilicata .

1025 inhabitants live in Garaguso (as of December 31, 2019). The place is 62 km west of Matera . The neighboring municipalities are Calciano , Grassano , Oliveto Lucano , Salandra and San Mauro Forte .

People lived here as early as prehistoric times. The place had a heyday in antiquity , at the time of the Magna Graecia . The settlement was later destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt under Count Sanseverino di Tricarico . The name Garaguso comes from marsh grass and earth wall and means something like "hill in the marshland".

A small Greek temple was found in the Archaeological Area of ​​Garaguso. This temple is exhibited in the Museum of Potenza .
