Grottole is a municipality in the southern Italian province of Matera in the Basilicata region . Grottole is about 13 km from Grassano . The village has 2149 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on an area of ​​115 km².

Grottole is elevated between Miglionico and Grassano, west of Lake San Giuliano. Like all villages in the region, it was devastated by an earthquake in 1980 . Since then there have been very few new buildings. The houses in the village, whether damaged by the earthquake or not, have largely remained in their original state.
