geography

Montalbano Jonico is located on a hill 292 m above sea level in the southwestern part of the province of Matera, between the Cavone and Agri rivers. The “ Calanchi ”, eroded hills with deep gullies without vegetation, are characteristic of the immediate vicinity . They emerged after clearing the forest, favored by soft, loamy soil. The landscape has therefore always been prone to landslides, which is a problem for the settlements. On January 18, 2011, the Regional Council of Basilicata approved a law establishing the special nature reserve of the Calanchi of Montalbano Jonico ( Riserva naturale speciale dei Calanchi di Montalbano Jonico ).

Montalbano Jonico is divided into Zone 2 (medium to high) according to the Italian seismic classification (Classificazione sismica dell'Italia).

traffic

Montalbano Jonico was the terminus of the Bari – Montalbano Jonico narrow-gauge railway .
