The Pisticci airfield ( it. Aviosuperficie di Pisticci “Enrico Mattei” ) is located in the southern Italian region of Basilicata , around 30 kilometers south of Matera and around five kilometers north of Pisticci .
Infrastructure and use
The airfield is located in the Basentotal next to the industrial area of the Pisticci Scalo district on the Basentana state road and the Battipaglia – Metaponto railway line running parallel to it . The airfield currently has an asphalt runway (13/31) that is still 1,400 meters long and is to be extended to 1,600 or 1,800 meters as part of an expansion project. There is a small apron in the far south-east. There is no taxiway running parallel to the runway . The airfield is currently only used by general aviation .
history
The history of the airfield is closely related to the industrial complex of Pisticci, which the entrepreneur Enrico Mattei had built from 1961. Since Mattei often used private planes, he had a small airfield set up next to it, the so-called Pista Mattei . After his death he was orphaned for a long time. An expansion to the regional airport ( Aeroporto della Basilicata ) and thus the only commercial airport in the Basilicata region has been planned for a long time and is very controversial because of the doubts about profitability. The project was supported by the director Francis Ford Coppola , whose ancestors came from the region.
