from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arthur Dale Trendall (born March 28, 1909 in Auckland , New Zealand , † November 13, 1995 in Melbourne ) was a New Zealand classical archaeologist .

Life

Trendall studied at King's College in Auckland (1916-1925); the University of New Zealand in Dunedin (1926-1929) and at the Trinity College of the University of Cambridge (1931-33). Between 1933 and 1939 he toured Europe, especially the museums and archaeological sites in Greece and Italy. In 1936 he became a librarian at the British Archaeological School in Rome, and from 1936 to 1940 he was a Fellow of Trinity College. In 1939 he was appointed to the chair of Greek philology at the University of Sydney , which he held until 1954, and since 1948 the chair of archeology. He spent the war years as a cryptographer in the secret service. In 1954 he was appointed to the first master’s degree at the University House of the Australian National University in Canberra . He held this office until 1969, when he gave it up in favor of his studies in Lower Italian vase painting . He became a Resident Fellow at Menzies College at La Trobe University , where he conducted intensive research into this art form.

Although the assignment of the Lower Italian vases to five main manufacturers ( Apulian , Campanian , Lucan , Paestan , Sicilian ) does not go back to Trendall, his research has helped to clarify the affiliation of over 20,000 vases to these groups and, in the tradition of John D. Beazley 's, facilitating the divorce of individual painters' hands. His studies form the basis of any occupation with Lower Italian vase painting.

In 1968 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy . In 1977 he became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .
