Thomas Bertram Lonsdale Webster (mostly TBL Webster ) (born July 3, 1905 , † May 31, 1974 ) was a British classical philologist and archaeologist .

TBL Webster attended Charterhouse School and then studied at Oxford University . Here he studied a. a. Archeology with John D. Beazley , but he was particularly interested in Menander and Greek comedy . He tried to reconstruct the plot of the mostly lost pieces from fragments and archaeological documents, especially vase painting.

As the successor to William Moir Calder (1881-1960) he was from 1931 to 1948 Hulme Professor of Greek at the University of Manchester . From 1948 to 1968 he was Chair of Greek at University College London , where he co-founded the Institute of Classical Studies in 1953 . After the death of his wife, the classical philologist Amy Marjorie Dale (1901–1967), he moved to the USA in 1968 and taught at Stanford University as Emeritus Professor of Classics . In 1965 he was elected a member of the British Academy .
