Alexander Cambitoglou ( Greek Αλέξανδρος Καμπίτογλου Aléxandros Kabítoglou ; born 1922 in Thessaloniki ; died on November 29, 2019 in Sydney ) was an Australian classical archaeologist of Greek descent.

Life

Alexander Cambitoglou initially studied at the University of Thessaloniki , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts . He received his Masters from the University of Manchester before earning his PhD from the University of London . He received another doctorate from the University of Oxford , where he studied with John D. Beazley . From 1954 to 1956 he was the second professor of classical archeology at the University of Mississippi , from 1956 to 1961 he was second professor at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania .

From 1956 to 1961 he was a member of the American committee for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum and was director of the summer seminars of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens . Under George E. Mylonas he took part in the excavations at the sanctuary in Eleusis .

In 1961 he made his way to Australia, where he initially worked as a lecturer at the University of Sydney and from April 1, 1963 as a professor of archeology. In 1978 he became Arthur and Renee George Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Sydney. He held this chair until his retirement in 1989. From 1963 to 2000 Cambitoglou was also curator of the antiquities collection at the Nicholson Museum in Sydney.

Soon after arriving in Australia, Alexander Cambitoglou began promoting Australian research in Greece. In 1967 he began his excavations in the geometric settlement of Zagora on Andros , a joint project of the Archaeological Society in Athens and the University of Sydney. In 1975 these investigations were replaced by the Australian excavations in Torone , which he also directed. These ventures made a permanent Australian presence in Greece necessary. In 1980 Cambitoglou founded the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (AAIA), of which he was director until 2016.

In addition to the publication of his numerous excavation reports, his main interest since his student days was the red-figure vase painting of the Greek colonies in southern Italy . In this research area he worked for over forty years with Arthur D. Trendall , with whom he published numerous works on the results of their research.

Due to his extensive knowledge, Cambitoglou was a member of the international scientific committee of the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae and the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum .
