Melissa Ellen Gilbert (born May 8, 1964 in Los Angeles ) is an American actress . She was best known for her role as Laura Ingalls on Our Little Farm .

Life

Melissa Gilbert was adopted by the actor couple Paul Gilbert and Barbara Crane shortly after her birth. As a young child, she appeared in various commercials before she was discovered by Michael Landon in 1974 for the role of Laura Ingalls in Our Little Farm . After Paul Gilbert died in 1975, Gilbert saw Michael Landon as something of a father substitute. She often spent the weekends with his family. Even Gilbert's siblings are active as an actor: Her younger adopted brother Jonathan was in Little House seen as Willie Oleson, her adoptive half-sister Sara was primarily through their roles as Darlene in the comedy television series Roseanne and Leslie Winkle in The Big Bang Theory known .

In her career, Gilbert embodied three of the most famous historical girl figures of the 19th and 20th centuries: Helen Keller , Anne Frank and Laura Ingalls, whereby the first two were portrayed historically correctly, while Laura Ingalls is placed in fictional contexts in the series mentioned above. Founded in 1979 by Gilbert's manager, Half-Pint Productions was named after Gilbert's nickname in the series Our Little Farm . One of Half-Pint's productions was The Miracle Worker . Gilbert played there the young, blind and deaf-mute Helen Keller. Following the family series Our Little Farm , Gilbert starred in more than 30 films, which were largely factual and dealt with topics such as rape , child abuse , incest and autism .

Gilbert was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the age of 21 and shares the youth record with singer Britney Spears . She has also won the Young Artist Award for "Best Young Actress in a TV Series" twice - in 1983 and 1984 . In the VH1 list of the "100 Greatest Child Stars of All Time", the actress is 31st. From 2001 to 2005, Gilbert was President of the US Screen Actors Guild .

From 1995 to 2011 Gilbert was married to actor Bruce Boxleitner . The couple's son was named Michael in memory of Gilbert's serial father Michael Landon. Gilbert has another son from her 1988-1992 marriage to Bo Brinkman. In April 2013 Gilbert married the American actor and television director Timothy Busfield .

From 2008 to 2010 Gilbert played the role of Caroline Ingalls in the American musical version of Our Little Farm . In 2012 she took part in the US dance show Dancing with the Stars , the US counterpart to Let's Dance , and suffered a slight concussion while presenting a Paso Doble with her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

In August 2015, Gilbert announced her intention to run for the Democrats in Michigan's 8th Congressional District for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . In May 2016 she ended her candidacy due to health problems.
