action

season 1

Ben Crawford is a self-employed painter and varnisher who is married to Christy. They have two daughters together, Natalie and Abby. Ben's best friend Dave lives in the family garden shed. One morning Ben finds the body of five-year-old boy next door Tom Murphy while jogging. For chief investigator Andrea Cornell, Ben quickly becomes the prime suspect because he is the only witness and has no alibi. Ben cannot prove his innocence as he was in a bar with Dave because he had an argument with Christy and was blacked out afterwards. The family is suffering from national media coverage as everyone believes Ben is guilty, including his neighbors. It also emerges that Tom was killed with a flashlight that was once given to Ben for his birthday.

During the investigation, it emerges that Tom is Ben's son and that he had a one-night stand with Tom's mother, Jess, six years ago. Ben and Jess only find out about this through a DNA test carried out by the police. On the evening of the crime, Christy found out about the affair and later about his fatherhood. Since Ben has no faith in the police, he conducts his own investigation, which leads to false allegations against Scott, Jess' ex-husband, and other neighbors. He gets closer to Jess again until he finds out that she has bipolar disorder and has already lost a child. He accuses her of murdering Tom, which is why she freaks out and charges Ben with sexual harassment. Cornell talks to her and Jess withdraws the complaint.

Ben is manipulated by reporter Arthur Fenton who is only trying to damage Cornell's reputation. He is also kidnapped by his neighbor Kevin, a former CIA operator, who tries to elicit a confession from Ben through torture. Kevin fails and is arrested. Together with Dave, who admitted to having manipulated his drink in the bar, he reconstructs the night of the crime and can remember everything bit by bit. He can convince Cornell of his innocence, which is now targeting other suspects. In the meantime, Ben and Christy's marriage has broken down because of so many lies.

Independently of each other, Ben and Cornell track down the real culprit. As they learn, Abby killed Tom. Abby overheard Ben and Christy's argument over the affair with Jess that night. Abby wanted to leave with Tom because she believed she could bring her parents and Tom's parents back together. When Tom refused, Abby killed him. She tells her family that it was an accident and that she regrets her plan. Ben decides to take on Tom's murder to protect Abby. Cornell tries to talk Ben out of his plan because the evidence at the crime scene shows that Abby acted willfully. The investigator is convinced that Abby will kill again. Meanwhile, Christy leaves town with Abby and also learns of the resolution during the conversation. She is shocked when she learns Abby's actual plan to drown Tom in the river to make Jess move away.

In the second season it is learned that Ben was killed in prison. However, his innocence came to light, which is why Cornell's reputation as a detective was tarnished.

season 2

As the oldest of three siblings, Eric Warner is to take over his father John's private equity firm. On the evening of the company handover, Eric's pregnant wife Kate falls from the roof terrace of the house and dies. For the investigating detective Andrea Cornell, Eric quickly becomes the main suspect, as he was already in prison for manslaughter in his youth. Since Eric does not want to be convicted for the death of his wife, he sets out to find the real culprit with the help of former cop Danny. In the process, Eric has to learn some juicy details about his family, friends and wife:

  • His wife Kate already gave birth to a child, which she gave up for adoption. She also lied to her husband about her parents, who did not even die. During a visit to Kate's mother, Eric learns that Kate was having an affair with her mother's boyfriend and that he became pregnant. He goes in search of the child and finds him in Charlie Peterson. His adoptive mother, Belinda, met her only hours before Kate's death, but, as Eric finds out, did not kill her. He also finds out that Kate withdrew $ 100,000 from the joint account to pay the blackmailer who blackmailed Eric. She pushed a transponder to the blackmailer in order to find out his identity. Kate installed the corresponding spy app on a newly installed iPad, the access code of which Eric cannot decrypt. With Danny's help, the code can be cracked. Eric learns that his father, John, appears to be the blackmailer.
  • His brother Patrick and his wife Melanie have bought a property for $ 12 million on behalf of the company, without the knowledge of Eric and John. Kate found out and confronted Patrick. She promised Patrick to help him and not tell him anything. Since Patrick couldn't sell the house for a lot of money, he gave it to his wife. Melanie ran a brothel in the house. When the scandal could become public, Eric reports his brother to the police. Patrick and Melanie are arrested. Patrick learns that his wife cheated on him with his lawyer for years.
  • Eric's best friend Neil Oliver meets with prostitutes and call girls, also on the night of the murder. Kate found out because he billed his sex adventures at company expense. Since Neil Eric is not telling the truth, the friendship between the two falls apart. However, Neil decides to tell Eric everything. Also that he knew about Melanie's brothel. Together they can end Melanie's brothel business. Neil also admits that he is Eric's sister Amanda, who has just been separated from her husband Dr. Greg Young separated, loved and had a one night stand with her. Kate found out that too.

At the same time, Andrea Cornell is not only busy looking for the perpetrator, but also has to solve private problems. So she can not come to terms with the fact that she innocently left Ben Crawford behind bars and that her partner was shot in front of her eyes and the perpetrator is still at large. In addition, her teenage daughter Jennifer has slipped back into drug addiction and is struggling with renewed withdrawal. Danny is also looking for truths because his daughter Rachel has disappeared. He finds out that she worked as a call girl in Melanie's brothel and had an affair with Neil. He was also in contact with Kate, which is why he helps Eric with his research.

We also learn that Eric pushed his tyrannical mother down the stairs when he was young. Andrea Cornell arrests Eric for this, only to tell him at the station that she has identified the real culprit. Eric learns that his sister Amanda pushed Kate off the roof.

production

In October 2013, the television broadcaster ABC ordered the television series based on the Australian series of the same name. Initially, ten episodes were ordered. The series was produced by Barbie Kligman in collaboration with original producers Tracey Robertson and Nathan Mayfield.

The main role of the family man went to Ryan Phillippe in February 2014 . In the same month Natalie Martinez , Juliette Lewis and KaDee Strickland got their roles. Later in production, the role of Dave Carlyle was re-cast. Instead of Clifton Collins , Dan Fogler could now be seen in the series.

Since the series deals with a different case per season, only Juliette Lewis returned in her role in the second season. In June 2015, Michael Ealy was hired for one of the central leading roles in the second season.

The main locations are Charlotte and its suburbs.
