Mekia Cox (born November 18, 1981 in Christiansted , on Saint Croix , US Virgin Islands ) is an American actress and dancer . She became famous for her roles in the series Undercovers , Once Upon a Time - Once Upon a Time ... and The Rookie .

life and career

Mekia Cox was born on the island of Saint Croix, which is part of the US Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles . Her father is from Barbados . Her parents moved to Florida with her at the age of seven and settled in Orlando , where Cox received the Dr. Graduated from Phillips High School. Due to the close proximity to Universal Studios, she was able to be won over at a young age for some productions of the Nickelodeon channel , including a guest role in the series My Brother and Me , for which she first appeared in front of the camera in 1994. After graduating from high school, she studied at Florida State University , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in music in 2003 . She has been in the Caribbean since the first few years of her life, and after graduating from university, she appeared in theaters, including Broadway . Today she is the founder of her own theater company, called 42 Seven Productions . After guest roles on CSI: NY , Half & Half and One Tree Hill , she moved to Los Angeles where she settled permanently.

Shortly after moving, she was first seen in a guest role in Bones and was then cast as Sasha in a minor supporting role for the 90210 series . In 2009 she was hired as one of only 11 of a total of over 500 applicants as a background dancer for Michael Jackson's planned This Is It concert tour , which ultimately could not take place due to the pop singer's sudden death. Nevertheless, she worked with him in preparation for the tour and was seen, among other things, in the documentary entitled Michael Jackson's This Is It during test recordings for the single The Way You Make Me Feel with the singer and her colleagues.

After her engagement as a dancer, Cox was cast as Lizzy Gilliam in one of the leading roles in the series Undercovers . In this role she was seen until 2012, although the series was discontinued after only one season produced. In the 2011 comedy film Crazy, Stupid, Love she was seen in a supporting role as hairdresser Tiffany . A year later she played a central role as Sarah Miller in the dance film Battlefield America . This was followed by appearances in the series Dr. Dani Santino - Game of Life , Common Law , Leverage , Mob City , Almost Human , Gotham , Grey's Anatomy and Modern Family . In 2016, Cox starred as Amanda Warner in the second season of Secrets and Lies . In the same year she took on a recurring role as Robin Charles in Chicago Med . From 2017 to 2018 she was Sabine in the final seventh season of Once Upon a Time - Once Upon a Time ... in one of the leading roles. Since 2019 she has been part of the main cast as Detective Nyla Harper since the beginning of the second season of The Rookie .

Personal

Cox married her longtime partner Britt Leach in a traditional Caribbean wedding ceremony in April 2018. In December 2018, they became parents to a daughter.
