Dennis Weaver
William Dennis Weaver (born June 4, 1924 in Joplin , Missouri , † February 24, 2006 in Ridgway , Colorado ) was an American actor .
Life
During school and college days, Weaver was a successful athlete; so he was among other things in 1948 sixth at the US championships in the decathlon . He began his stage career with the help of Shelley Winters , who gave him a role in Kehr zurück, kleine Sheba in 1952 . Between 1955 and 1966 he played the character Chester in the western series Smoking Colts , for which he received an Emmy Award . With a few exceptions, these episodes were not broadcast in Germany. His best-known film appearances include those as a simple-minded night porter in Orson Welles ' Under the Signs of Evil and as a sidekick to James Garner in The Lonely From the West . In Steven Spielberg's film debut Duell (1971) he played the lead role, a lonely motorist who sees himself being followed by a truck. In Germany he also gained great popularity through the crime series A Sheriff in New York (1970 to 1977).
From 1973 to 1975 Weaver was President of the Screen Actors Guild . In 2006, the actor died of lung cancer at the age of 81 . His three sons Rick (* 1949), Robby (* 1953) and Rusty (* 1959) from his marriage to Gerry Stowell in 1945 are also active in the film industry.
